Motherhood is an unpredictable journey through all kinds of weird and wonderful things – as one mum said, “motherhood is the most difficult and the most beautiful thing in the world”. Today we’re only focusing on the beautiful side: we asked mothers what the most beautiful thing about motherhood is for them. Here are their answers:
“The fact that there is no such thing as too much love. I love my son endlessly, and it’s okay to show it, it’s never too much. Sometimes when he smiles at me it feels like my heart is just melting, literally. It’s the greatest thing in the world.”
“The feeling that from my body, inside my body a tiny baby has grown, a new person; I think nothing compares to this in the whole world. And to watch this tiny new life grow and evolve, to be able to hug him and breathe in his scent – these are life’s most precious gifts, I think.”
“The joy of watching my sons play, discover, interact, or just sleep. I still have a hard time believing that I gave birth to these wonderful creatures and that they are ‘mine’ in some way.”
“Love. Unconditional love, both from me towards my son, and vice versa. And breastfeeding.”
“How much more selfless and patient a person becomes. Motherhood makes you put another person above all. And that is what makes you more beautiful. And baby smell. Baby smell is definitely the essence of life and one of the most beautiful things.”
“I love to see the love that my sons have for my husband and I, the way they still cling to us. It’s nice to know that they feel whole together with us.”
“When I can see my child being happy. It’s a wonderful feeling when you go home after a hard day’s work and your little angel is waiting for you. When she tells you about her day in her own child language, all your troubles seem to fade away.”
“The relationship that lasts for a lifetime. As we raise our children and pass on our knowledge to them we change as well, even if we don’t notice it. We may get to know ourselves from a completely new side; one that we didn’t know existed before.”
“Before my baby was born it used to be unconditional love; now that I have a baby I would add sacrifice and selflessness.”
“I couldn’t pick just one thing. Among the most beautiful things is for example the fact that I’m the most certain and stable thing in my baby’s life. She’s still so helpless, and yet she’s growing and developing day by day.”
“The feeling when your baby is born and you can finally hold him in your arms; nothing can compare to that. And to see him every day as he’s growing and learns more and more, and to see the developing relationship between him and his father. And breastfeeding, though I could only do it for a very little while. It’s hard to put it into words.”
“To be part of the creating process where love is being embodied. To experience unconditional love. To see your child develop and blossom.”
“Being reborn. Also, witnessing a child growing up makes one rethink one’s own life.”
“When she first said ‘I love you’.”
“Hugs, kisses, and saying I love you. It sounds silly, but I want to plant as many kisses on them as there are stars in the sky. I hug them like a hobby that I never get tired of, and I tell them I love them whenever I have a moment to snug those three sweet words in their little ears. I found that hugs and kisses speak louder than words to show my affection and admiration, while telling them I love them just reinforces the message. With time, they reciprocate and it’s a great feeling to get voluntary hugs and kisses out of the blue from your kids.”
